Why Comics Matter to Me

When I was six years old, I remembered vividly seeing the first live-action Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire. I remembered the amazing visuals such as Peter Parker swinging from building to building with so much grace while battling the Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe. After seeing this movie, I wanted to read the source material and know more about it, but six year old me did not know what to look for. Eventually, my mom helped me find out and I soon found myself with my first Spider-Man comic book. The focus of my first comic was when the Marvel Universe dealt with the tragic and real-life events of September 11th, 2001 and the book recognized and acknowledged the real heroes such as the doctors, nurses, police officers, and the firemen who risked their lives to help people. Later on, I eventually found out more about the other characters that inhabited the Marvel Universe alongside Spider-Man and I eventually found my next favorite hero, the Incredible Hulk. As I got older (I'm 22 now) I started seeing that I related to these characters the most as Peter dealt with real-life issues such as money problems, trying to find a good-paying job, finding/staying with a girlfriend, etc. and I did find that I struggled with anger issues like Bruce Banner (just not to very destructive levels). Reading not only Peter and Bruce's stories, but the stories of various other Marvel characters and seeing their (many) films helped me realize some very important life lessons early in my life such as knowing when to stick up for people when you have the power and responsibility to do so, not letting your anger control you, and to always cherish every one around you and the moments you spend with them. I continue to collect comics to this day and have nearly hit well over 1,500 books the last time I counted, and I plan on sticking with this hobby as it has brought me immense joy and fond memories that I would never trade for the world.
