Why Comics Matter to Me

When I was six years old, I remembered vividly seeing the first live-action Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire. I remembered the amazing visuals such as Peter Parker swinging from building to building with so much grace while battling the Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe. After seeing this movie, I wanted to read the source material and know more about it, but six year old me did not know what to look for. Eventually, my mom helped me find out and I soon found myself with my first Spider-Man comic book. The focus of my first comic was when the Marvel Universe dealt with the tragic and real-life events of September 11th, 2001 and the book recognized and acknowledged the real heroes such as the doctors, nurses, police officers, and the firemen who risked their lives to help people. Later on, I eventually found out more about the other characters that inhabited the Marvel Universe alongside Spider-Man and I eventually found my next favorite hero, the Incredible Hulk.
